Volunteering at The Simkin Centre
Volunteers are an essential part of our team at The Simkin Centre. Most volunteer placements take place during weekday daytime hours; however, some evening and weekend opportunities are available through our Therapeutic Recreation programs and Spiritual Care Services. Volunteer placements are matched based on the needs of the Home as well as your interests, skills, and availability.
Volunteer Requirements
Volunteers must be:
- At least 14 years old (with signed parental consent if under 18)
- In good physical and mental health
- Able to commit to a minimum of 6 months
- Willing to commit to a regularly scheduled weekly shift
- Enthusiastic, positive, respectful, and compassionate
- Reliable, trustworthy, and able to work independently
- Prepared to complete a Criminal Record Check if over 18 and placed in a role involving one-to-one interaction with Residents
What to Expect When You Apply to Volunteer
Step 1: Application
Applying to volunteer is similar to applying for a job. We carefully review each application to ensure volunteers are a good fit for our programs and for the needs of our Residents. Please complete your application as thoroughly as possible—this helps us assess your suitability for a health‑care environment. If you are under 18, you must complete the Parental/Guardian Consent section of the application.
Step 2: The Interview
Once your application is received, Volunteer Services may contact you to schedule an interview. You will also be asked to bring three (3) references. The interview helps us learn more about you, your interests, and your goals as a volunteer. It is also your opportunity to ask any questions about volunteering at The Simkin Centre. During the interview, we will review expectations for volunteers and discuss the importance of confidentiality.
Step 3: Screening
After your interview, Volunteer Services will contact your references. Applicants who are 18 years or older and applying for roles involving one-to-one interaction with Residents will also be required to complete a Criminal Record Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check.
Step 4: The Offer
If your skills and interests match an available volunteer role, Volunteer Services will offer you a placement. If you accept, we will work with you to determine a start date. Students volunteering for school credit are responsible for tracking their own hours to ensure they meet school requirements.
Step 5: Training & Orientation
On your first day, you will receive a volunteer identification tag and a general orientation to the facility. You will also receive training specific to your volunteer role. After that—you’re ready to begin volunteering!

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the process for becoming a volunteer?
To get started, please complete our volunteer application form. Once it’s received, Volunteer Services will contact you to schedule an interview and check your references. If we find a good match, you’ll attend an orientation session and receive training for your volunteer role.
Is there a time commitment?
We aim to accommodate your schedule, but we do ask for a commitment of at least three months. Most volunteers find they enjoy their experience at The Simkin Centre and choose to stay longer.
What are the volunteer shifts like—how long and how often?
Most volunteer shifts are 2–4 hours long, and specific programs ask volunteers to participate once per week. Some special events and roles offer one‑time, single‑shift opportunities for volunteers who prefer occasional involvement.
Is there a minimum age to volunteer?
Yes. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old.
Do I need a Criminal Record Check or Adult Abuse Registry Check?
Volunteers who are 18 years or older and serve in roles involving one‑to‑one interaction with Residents must complete both a Criminal Record Check and an Adult Abuse Registry Check.
What kind of references do I need?
Your references should be people who have known you for at least three months and represent different areas of your life—such as teachers, co‑workers, youth leaders, supervisors, or colleagues. Please ask their permission first and provide their current email addresses and phone numbers.
I’m a student on a visa. Can I volunteer?
Yes! Students on visas are welcome to volunteer.
Is there parking available for volunteers?
Yes. Volunteers may park in the main visitor parking lot at The Simkin Centre.
Can I move from one role to another?
Absolutely. Once you have fulfilled your current commitment, you’re encouraged to explore new roles or sign up for special events. Some volunteers choose to help in more than one area, depending on their availability.
What are the benefits of volunteering at The Simkin Centre?
There are so many benefits! You will support and uplift elders in your community, make new friends, stay active and engaged, gain experience, and make a meaningful impact.
